Monkton Nature Reserve

Monkton Nature Reserve is a hidden gem, set in 16 beautiful acres of an abandoned chalk quarry, which has been dramatically reclaimed by nature. It features many important habitats including woodland, cliffs and important chalk grassland., fascinating geology and rare orchids including Bee, Man, and occasionally Lizard Orchids. There are numerous species of chalk-loving plants, small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and at least 26 species of butterfly, and a wide variety of birds.

There are two trails for visitors to explore, one along the floor of the chalk quarry and another along the cliffs to the woodland, with scenic views across the surrounding countryside.

We also own the Thanet Observatories where astronomy activities are regularly held by the Monkton Stargazers and the first artificial bat cave built in the UK..
